The hotel and resort sectors of the contract and hospitality business retain the top spot for outdoor projects, with 85% of outdoor manufacturers selling to those segments. That's according to Casual Living's exclusive 2014 Outdoor Contract Market survey. Eight in 10 designers report that fire pits are growing in popularity for outdoor contract projects, while almost half say motion pieces are fading. Casual Living magazine surveyed casual and outdoor vendors to gain a better understanding of the outdoor contract and hospitality market, as well as indoor and outdoor designers. Responding vendors and designers provided answers to online surveys in February and March 2014.

Sixty-two percent of vendor respondents estimate 2013 contract casual furniture sales to be $4.9 million or less; 38% estimate sales to be $5 million or more. Two-thirds of responding designers are freelance/independent interior designers or designers with an interior design firm; 15% are designers with a full-line furniture store or casual furniture specialist; the remaining 18% are designers associated with architecture or construction firms. Nearly four in 10 responding designers are in the West, 29% in the South, 18% in the Northeast, and 14% in the Midwest.
