Leather upholstery sales reached $11.74 billion in 2015 and accounted for 38% of the upholstery category, including stationary sofas, motion sofas, sectionals and recliners.
Leather is the darling of the upholstery category and a bright spot on the furniture store sales floor. Consumer Buying Trends data from Furniture/ Today shows that buyers spend on average two times more for leather covers. New research conducted this year supports that statistic as nearly six out of 10 consumers are willing to spend more money on a sofa covered in 100% leather.
Furniture/Today fielded an online consumer survey in January asking questions about upholstery furniture and decorating the home. The survey was among female and male consumers ages 21 to 70 and the sample was balanced nationally by household income and region of the country. The survey garnered responses from 651 consumers.
