Nine out of 10 retailers attend trade shows for the variety of vendors and another 89% value new products and new vendors. That's according to Gifts and Decorative Accessories' exclusive 2014 Today's Gift Retailer Survey.
Eighty-six percent say it's important to see and feel products before buying. That's one of the main reasons retailers spend resources traveling to trade shows and being away from their business for days at a time. This year's exclusive survey results, collected during March and April, are based on the responses of 225 gift retailers. More than half, at 56% of the responding retailers describe themselves as gift specialists, 11% are classified as hospital gift shops and 10% are home accessories stores. Other retailers responding include florists, stationery and card shops, museum gift shops, toy and hobby stores, theme parks, candy stores and hardware and garden stores. Thirty-one percent of responding gift retailers are located in the South, 27% in the Midwest, 26% in the Northeast and 16% in the West. Forty-four percent of retailers say 2013 sales compared with 2012 sales were up. For this year, 53% of retailers are projecting sales to be higher than last year.
