Product Description

Home accent sales rose for more than half of furniture stores last year, by a median of 10%. And, six out of 10 furniture stores project accent sales to grow again this year, by a median of 11%.

That’s a key finding reported by furniture stores answering Home Accents Today’s 2016 Furniture Store Survey. An overview of home accent merchandise mix information and operating data through the furniture store channel is provided in this exclusive report.

The survey defined home accents as area rugs, wall décor, lamps, lighting  fixtures, accent furniture, poufs, ottomans, mirrors, wall art, decorative pillows, top-of-bed linens, permanent botanicals and the catch-all decorative accessories category, which includes vases, sculptures, candleholders, storage and other accessories.

The majority of responding stores, at 53%, report higher margins for home accents than furniture margins. According to one, “cash and carry accents are a plus for our business.”

About the data

Home Accents Today’s 2016 Furniture Store Survey looks at home accent merchandise mix data within the furniture store channel. Companies representing 150 storefronts participated in the survey. Data reflects the fiscal year ending closest to December 31, 2015.

Responding stores include full-line furniture stores, product and style specialty stores and manufacturer-branded stores. All regions of the country are represented. Twenty percent of responding furniture stores reported 2015 total sales of less than $2 million; 35% between $2 million and $19.9 million; 10% between $20 and $49.9 million; and 35% of respondents reported 2015 total sales of $50 million or more.

Total U.S. furniture store sales from all product categories were $56.8 billion in 2015, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce.
