Area rugs were on the shopping lists of 14.9 million U.S. households last year, with 11.2 million following through and making a purchase. That's the finding from Home Accents Today's exclusive Consumer Buying Trends survey, conducted last December among a nationally-representative sample of 2,500 U.S. households. Overall, rug buyers spent a median of $60. Households living in the Northeast spent the most, a median of $80, while Southerners spent the least amount, a median of $50. The most popular rug price point fell between $50 and $74 in 2010, with 17% of buyers spending within that low range.

On the higher end of the price spectrum, 8% of buyers spent between $300 and $499, and 3% each spent between $500 and $999, and $1,000 or more. This exclusive consumer data originates from the responses of 2,500 U.S. households to an online survey conducted in December 2010. Sister publication Furniture/Today worked with TNS, a Kantar Group Company, to examine home furnishings shopping and purchasing patterns among consumers in 2010 and buying plans for 2011. U.S. households were asked whether they shopped for an area rug in 2010, bought one in 2010, how much they spent in 2010 and if they planned to buy a rug in 2011. The survey did not ask that respondents differentiate between sizes of rugs. Because of the sample size and a respondent profile closely matching the demographics of all U.S. households, survey data can be projected nationally with a margin of error of plus or minus 2%.
